First, Notice that most people do not have conversations that are neat and orderly. What I am saying is this: Often the point gets across, but the message is jumbled up with inner meanings,side crack statements, and avoidance of issues.
Second, when writing dialog, always try to reveal the characters inner issues through the interaction of the conversation. For instance, maybe daughter is simply burning up that she was grounded during the most important dance of the year and mother has just asked her to do something. How do you think that is going to go? smoothly? Absolutely not. This is a great opportunity for a writer to show character flaws, inner struggle, and move the story forward.
So, how do we master this. We've all been told to listen to conversations around us and try writing them down word for word. Yaddda yadda... I came up with something better: Court documents. Seriously. You get a great feel for how to display unique character traits and what a raw conversation looks like. You can even feel the suspense. And the great thing is: it's all free and its all true.
